Hi,
i just bought a nice pair of Altec 802-8d. The owner took the bug screens out of the throats. Does this make sense? What are the pros, and what are the cons?
Does anyone have experiences with this "issue"?
Greetings Barossi

Some people believe that removing the screens improves the audio quality. Others hear no difference. The intended purpose is to keep insects, debris, and unknowing fingers away from the diaphragm. There is no harm in removing them but it is fairly permanent.

Yeah, they say if you remove the screen the sound is better, more transparency I think they said! I couldnt really hear any difference. A freind of mine did this with two comp drivers and both of us agreed we didnt hear a difference!
My opinion on things is the manufacturer designed and made the unit a certain way, and they liked it, so I like it too!
I say leave well enough be, and dont fix what aint broke!

I leave the bug screens in, if you remove them the aluminum throat has some play in it as the gap filled by the screen is now a void, I'd put a dab of glue to hold them all the way in so they won't resonate from being loose!! Regarding keeping fingers out, they make no difference as a finger won't get past the metal phase plugs, Dave.

Here in Illinois the farmers use Asian beetles, little buggers that look just like ladybugs and with hard shells that allow them to squirm through door and window seals and they will get into your house.
A pal of mine was considering removing the bug-screens from his JBL 2420s until he noticed a couple of the beetles crawling up inside his Edgar slaldbowls towards the drivers. He decided to leave the screens.
